The Fourth Asia CCUS Network Forum
Bangkok, 15 August 2024: The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia as the secretariat of the Asia CCUS Network held the 4th Asia CCUS Network Forum on 15 August 2024 in Bangkok. The event was co-hosted with the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) Japan and the Institute of Energy Economics Japan (IEEJ) with the collaboration of Sustainable Energy Technology Asia (SETA) 2024 and the Ministry of Energy, Thailand.
The forum was started with a Joint opening session of SETA 2024 and ACNF4, which invites distinguished speakers, among others; Prof Dr Pisut Painmanakul, Chairman of SETA 2024; Dr Norkun Sitthiphong, Advisor to the Minister of Energy on behalf of the Minister of Energy, Thailand; HE Mr Otaka Masato, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Thailand; Mr Tsuruda Masanori, Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan; Prof Tatsuya Terazawa, Chairman and CEO, IEEJ; Mr Hirose Naomi, Vice Chair Impact, World Energy Council (WEC), Former CEO of Tokyo Electric Power Co. Ltd. (TEPCO); Dr. Chana Poomee, Chief Sustainability Officer, The Siam Cement Group (SCG), Thailand; and Mr Shigeru Kimura, Senior Policy Fellow for Energy Affairs on behalf of the President, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)
Mr Kimura delivered the welcome addresses on behalf of ERIA President during the session. Mr Kimura underscores the importance of CCUS for ASEAN to meet carbon neutrality and decarbonization targets while prospering economic growth and energy security. Mr Kimura also introduces the Asia CCUS Network which is established with the goal to promotes the utilization of CCUS, including the ACNF which in this year will discuss CCUS related topics including commercialization of CCS, CCU or carbon recycling, and the policy, regulation, and financing of carbon management challenges.
The program continued with ministerial remarks from ACN’s member countries from Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, and from ERIA President, which were delivered through pre-recorded videos. The ministers and representatives congratulated and wished the success of the forum and acknowledged the Asia CCUS Network as the platform to promote decarbonization through the acceleration of CCUS implementation. Following this, keynote speech addresses were delivered by Mr Jarad Daniels, CEO of Global CCS Institute, and Dr Yamamoto Koji, Vice President, Energy Business Unit, Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security. The program then continued with 3 panel discussions.
The first panel discussion session discussed ‘Shifting CCS to Commercial Business under Appropriate Regulations’. The panel was moderated by Dr I Gusti Suarnaya Sidemen, CCS-CCUS Expert, ERIA, and invited 2 speakers from private companies: ExxonMobil and Asia Natural Gas & Energy Association (ANGEA) and 2 speakers from governmental bodies: United States’ Department of Energy (US DOE) and METI Japan.
The second panel discussed on Carbon Capture and Utilization (Carbon Recycling) which invites industries, research institutions, and government to share on the latest updates on carbon recycling within the region. The panel was moderated by Mr. Shigeru Kimura, Senior Policy Fellow for Energy Affairs, ERIA. The panelists in the session are from DCCEEW Australia, NEDO Japan, IHI Corporation, SCG Chemicals Co. Thailand, and Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy, and Environment (ISCE2).
The third panel discussed CCUS Policy, Regulation, and Financing for Carbon Management. The session was moderated by Dr Han Phoumin, Senior Energy Economist, ERIA, and invited 4 speakers which are the ACN Advisory Group Members from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Japan.
The wrap up session was delivered by Dr I Gusti Suarnaya Sidemen, where he summarized the whole day forum and conveyed the key takeaways from the panel discussions. Dr Han Phoumin delivered the closing remarks.
